Phoebe Rumsey

Ms. Rumsey is an accomplished performer and inspirational teacher. Her positive nurturing approach; along with her expertise and innovative choreographic talents, are appreciated by both her students and colleagues.

Ms. Rumsey currently lives in New York City. She recently completed a Master of Arts in Performance Studies at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She will be starting a Ph.D. in Theatre at CUNY in the fall of 2014. Currently, she works at the Skirball Center for Performing Arts in New York. Phoebe has been training with a variety of exceptional teachers in New York in a multitude of styles taking in every opportunity to soak in the knowledge the dance mecca has to offer. She recently taught a choreographic workshop at the 2014 Praxis Conference at NYU titled ‘Gesture and the Choreographic Process’. She performed at PS. Hey You! in November 2013 and February and April 2014.

Previous to moving to New York, Ms. Rumsey taught jazz, ballet, lyrical, and musical theatre at Boston Dance Collective in Victoria, BC. She has taught at Dansko Studios, Victoria Dance Connection, Caulfield School of Dance and The Guelph School of Dance in Ontario. She has been a guest jazz teacher at The Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria and was on faculty at Kaleidoscope Performing Arts Studio. Ms. Rumsey has had the pleasure of adjudicating various festivals across Canada both in the ballet/contemporary categories and stage.

Ms. Rumsey’s professional performing career has allowed for much travel. Highlights include: 5 years as a dancer and swing in Las Vegas at the Rio Hotel’s Masquerade Show in the Sky, as well as working with the critically acclaimed Farrington Productions in events at Caesars, Harrah’s, and Studio 54 at the MGM. She was a dancer in the Broadway revue Fantasy Tonight in Atami City, Japan and survived three seasons of raucous Can-can shows at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s in Dawson City, Yukon. She was a dancer and singer in the American tour of Sixtiesmania. More recently, Ms. Rumsey was a cast member of Love Matters, performing at the Butchart Gardens in Victoria. She performed and choreographed both Crush and Saltwater Soiree for Saltwater Theatre and performed at the inaugural Bounce! Cabaret with co-choreographer Amalia Schelhorn (National Ballet) in Filament in 2009.

Ms. Rumsey earned a Bachelor of Arts in Dance from Simon Fraser University and a Master of Arts in Theatre from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her ballet training (RAD and Cecchetti) has been under some of the most esteemed teachers in Canada, including Grant Strate, Earl Kraul, Umran Sumen and Shirley Agate Proust. At SFU, Ms. Rumsey was a member of The Off-Center Dance Company and had the opportunity to perform with a variety of artists including Chick Snipper of Danstabat and Lee Eisler of Jumpstart Dance. Ms. Rumsey trained in tap with Mercedes Ellington, Margo McDermott; jazz with Rod Gordon in Calgary as well as with Phineas Newborn and Cindra Che at The Edge in Los Angeles. Alongside her training, Ms. Rumsey searched out performance opportunities including: Carousel at Vancouver’s Theatre Under the Stars where she won the Grace MacDonald Award for Most Promising Dancer and The Music Man for NVOS, where she won the David Irving Award and scholarship as well as Oliver and Fiddler on the Roof at Stampede Dinner Theatre in Calgary. Her favorite role was Dream Laurie in Gateway Theatre’s production of Oklahoma.

Presently, along with her teaching, Ms. Rumsey has been working as a choreographer, including the following productions: A Midsummer’s Night Dream, Peter Pan, Silverwing, Aladdin, The Hobbit, Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical, Rocky Horror The Musical, Working The Musical, I Love You Your Perfect Now Change for Kaleidoscope Theatre, and The Mahagonny Songspiel, The Mummer’s Masque, and Pandora’s Locker for Saltwater Theatre. Most recently she directed and choreographed Seussical.

Like many young dancers, Ms. Rumsey’s love of dance started with performances in The Nutcracker with the Alberta Ballet. That passion continues to burn brightly today.
